Hair Color for Spring

BEAUTY CAST- FALL 2009- MEN'S TRENDS

This season, a strong shape that is featured in men's hair styling is the overlay bang with a short strong nape; a modern interpretation of a slightly eighties shape. The fringe is the focus with a slightly aggressive asymmetrical feel.

It is a modern way of embracing a longer shape but also offering versatility by allowing the top to be swept back for a modern version of the pompadour. The pompadour dates back to the Victorian Era; in the latter 19th century, and will most likely continue to reappear in hair culture for decades to come. Some iconic pompadours to grace the covers of magazines and album covers in the 60's and 70's were those of Johnny Cash and Morrissey of the Smiths.

To achieve this look, wash hair as normal and towel-dry until damp. Then, apply a liberal amount of Jon English® Products Gelatone™, forming the pompadour (take front section of hair and comb with fingers upward and forward past forehead, twisting slightly at the tip). Then blow-dry. Tilt your head upside down and blow-dry as you brush from the root of the scalp toward the tip of the pompadour. This will ensure the height of the hair is kept as the gel sets. Finally, apply an even spray of Jon English® Products Ventex™ and voila! Below are some modern takes on this timeless hair style.

Fall is the time to indulge in the complexity of fashion.

Dark and vivid colors, lots of layers, and a sense of the Eclectic pervade this year's runways and covershots. Jon English® Hairspa has been closely following this season's upcoming trends in hair, makeup and fashion. Below is our first installment of bringing you the latest in what's what for Fall hair in 2009.

Short continues to be strong statement for the girl who wants to make an entrance. Napes are tucked and enhanced by a bold and blunt

approach to the fringe that is reminiscent of the mod 1950's. We also see modern interpretations of the bowl cut, including the recently coined, "halo". Shag is definitely not in this season, and instead, mid-length hair features tightly blended shapes that taper down. Longer lengths this season include heavier layering and more texture. All hail the return of the curl and the wave!

As for color, this season is all about variations based on your natural tones. The idea of tone on tone color continues to be a modern approach to haircolor. This look (where slightly lighter and darker tones of your natural color are dispersed in smaller strands across the head) highlights the uniqueness of your natural color while giving it more depth and richness. The concept is that hair has a deceptively natural appearance, where the ends appear slightly lighter than the new growth.

Reds this season become copper tones, Brunettes become icier and a slightly yellow platinum updates the 21st century blonde.

Jon & Linda English appear in SHOPS '09

Husband and wife team, Jon and Linda English, owners and creative directors of Jon English Salons and Jon English Products, were recently featured in the 2009 issue of Shops. Shops is an annual publication by Mpls/St. Paul Magazine that focuses on the top local businesses in the Twin Cities.

Jon and Linda were chosen for a recurring segment entitled, "Closet Confidential", in which their wardrobe doors were opened to the private eye, and their unique fashion senses were highlighted respectively. They were also interviewed separately about how fashion has inspired their roles in the beauty biz, and some of their favorite pieces.

Here's some of what they had to say:

Describe your personal style.

The benefit of living long enough is that your style becomes more defined. People tend to get either more conservative or more eccentric as they get older. I guess I'm considered eccentric.

Are you inspired by fashion trends?

Yes, from specific designeres. Way out in front is Paul Smith. He's just magical. Then Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Prada. But I also like Theory, because it's really contemporary and modern.

Does owning a salon influence your style?

Sure. I think we tend to attract what we reflect and vice versa. I started styling hair when I was thirteen years old and I was working in London with a client base that was in the fashion business. They were good teachers—very style-influential—and I was always a good student.

Do you follow fashion trends?

Of course—we're in the fashion business. But I don't feel obliged to purchase or be something I'm not. I think the way we dress is a form of how we express ourselves, and it's good to be aware of it. I mean, fashion is fun; it changes how we see things. But I encourage people to find their own way of presenting themselves—a way that feels good to them. Sure, there are trends and there's a look that's modern, but there are so many variations on that.

Where are your favorite places to shop in the Twin Cities?

I like H&M, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom. In New York, I love Barneys and Bergdorf's. But I am practical—I don't like to buy things I won't use, I just like to appreciate those things in the store.

What's your biggest shopping weakness?

Shoes. It all started with a pair of white go-go boots that I wanted so badly in fifth grade. I still remember my mom coming into my room with a box and crying with joy when I saw them. I wore a hole in those boots! Handbags are a close runner-up.

Trends for Spring

Bold! Graphic! Strong! Youthful!

These are a myriad of words used to describe Spring 2008 hair trends at Jon English Hairspa. Spring is about renewal and change. The focus on Spring is a definitive departure from Fall-Winter hairstyles. Shorter shapes are powerful and youthful with an emphasis on structure and inexplicitly modern! Everything you thought of short-hair has changed, and in its place is an edgy, aggressive style with versatility and ease.

Napes are restricted with movement throughout the crown. Fringe is the main focus. Versatility lends way to many styling options through use of Jon English styling products.

The bob continues to be a strong focal point in the Spring '08 trend. Shapes are more graphic with layering to keep it modern. In both of these shorter styles, color is the key to keeping it youthful.

Highlights have been replaced with all-over color. Color is either a bright, clear platinum or intense cool dark tones. Don't assume that long hair isn't changing for Spring '08, either. The perimeter is strong with short mod layers. A fringe is clearly important with styling versatility. Once can either embrace straight, sleek hair or beachy wavy finish. Jon English in the Star Tribune!

A recent article in the Star Tribune discussed Governor Pawlenty's need for a new "do", and the importance of appearing stylish and confident as a prominent politician.

Jon was featured in the article for his fashion-forward advice. He had this to say:

"I'd cut him between Tom Ford and a George Clooney. [Pawlenty] wear his hair combed back.

It makes his forehead appear so tall, and I think most of all, from a political standpoint, people are looking for a man of the times," English said.

"Tom Ford's and George Clooney's images are very masculine; both look very modern, self-confident. That is what I would imagine people want to vote for."
